What the WESTBRONCO collection is known for

Four pieces people come back for: the crescent that started the line, the crossbody that survives a commute, the tote that takes a laptop, the wristlet that lives inside all three.

Our story

How WESTBRONCO began, and what we have kept

We began in 2017 with one bag and one complaint. The leather shoulder bag one of us carried every day weighed more empty than the laptop inside it, and by six in the evening it had left a red line across one shoulder. We wanted the opposite of that bag: soft against the body, light enough to forget, roomy enough for a phone, a wallet, keys, a paperback and a bottle of water.

The answer turned out to be quilting. Two layers of nylon with a thin layer of wadding between them hold a shape on their own. No frame, no stiff board in the base, no metal feet. A WESTBRONCO bag keeps its silhouette because of the way it is sewn, and that is the whole trick. Take the frame out and you take most of the weight out with it.

One shape, then five

The crescent came first because it is the shape that sits closest to the body. A curved base follows the hip instead of swinging away from it, and a short strap keeps the weight high, where your shoulder can take it. Everything after that answered a question someone asked us. The crossbody came from people who wanted both hands free. The tote came from people who carry a laptop. The small backpack came from parents and from anyone who walks to work.

The crescent shoulder bag, the shape the WESTBRONCO studio started with.

The wallets came last and they are the WESTBRONCO staples we are quietest about. A wristlet that holds a phone, four cards and a key is the difference between carrying a bag on a Saturday and carrying nothing at all.

What quilted nylon does, and what it does not

Nylon shrugs off a drizzle and wipes clean with a damp cloth. It does not care about a coffee ring the way suede does. It is water resistant, which is not the same as waterproof: a walk from the car in the rain is fine, an hour in a downpour with a paper notebook inside is not. We would rather say that here than let you find it out in November.

Quilting also has a cost we do not hide. A puffy bag has no hard edges, so it will not stand up on its own when it is empty, and a laptop rides better in the models where we sewed a padded sleeve than in the ones where it does not. Each piece in the range says which it is.

Colour is half the work

The WESTBRONCO philosophy on colour is a quiet palette: powder pink, rose, khaki, sand, sage, ivory, black. These are colours that sit under a coat in February and next to a linen dress in July. We repeat a shade across silhouettes on purpose, so a wristlet can match the tote it lives in, and we keep a shade in the range for as long as the fabric mill keeps making it.

That is the whole of it. Light bags, quiet colours, honest limits. If a piece does not do something, the page for that department says so.

The puffer line

Quilted through, light in the hand

These are the pieces where the quilting does the structural work. Nothing inside them is stiff, and every one of them folds flat in a drawer.

Made to last

What the WESTBRONCO team builds into every piece

A light bag fails at the seams before it fails at the fabric. These are the four places we spend the money, and the reason each one is there.

Bar-tacked strap joints

Every point where a strap meets the body is stitched back and forth across itself. It is the joint that goes first on a cheap bag, because it carries the whole load through two centimetres of fabric.

Nylon coil zips with pull tabs

Coil zips survive being forced more kindly than metal teeth do, and a fabric pull tab means you can open the bag with cold hands or gloves on.

A lining you can see into

Pale linings, not black. You can find a key in a pale lining without emptying the bag onto a table, and that is the whole argument.

Quilting that carries the shape

The wadding is thin on purpose. Enough to hold a silhouette and pad a phone screen, not so much that the bag eats its own volume.

Honest comparison

Quilted nylon against the materials it competes with

We make bags from quilted nylon, so we have skin in this. The table below is written the way we would explain it across a counter, including the places where another material wins.

If you want a bag that looks better in ten years than it did on day one, buy leather and look after it. If you want a bag that weighs nothing, wipes clean and comes in a colour you actually like, that is the argument for the WESTBRONCO approach.

Before a piece joins the range

The WESTBRONCO way, in plain words

Every shape earns its place the same way, and it takes a month. Here is what happens in the studio before a piece joins the range.

1A month of real carrying

A prototype goes home with someone on the team and gets used as their only bag for a month. Rain, a full water bottle, a car boot, a supermarket trolley.

2The load test we care about

We fill the bag with what people actually put in it, hang it by the strap overnight and look at the joints in the morning. A strap that has started to pucker does not go forward.

3Zip cycles by hand

Somebody sits with the sample and works the zip open and shut until their thumb complains. It is unglamorous and it catches a bad slider every time.

4Colour under two lights

Shades are checked in daylight and under warm indoor light, because a sage that reads grey in a hallway is not the sage we photographed.

This is the ordinary care of people who have to look at a bag on the shelf and say it is ready. Where a shape fails one of these four, it goes back to the pattern table.

Keeping it

How to wash a quilted nylon bag without ruining it

Nylon forgives a lot and punishes two things: heat and a spin cycle with hardware in it. Here is the short version, and the longer one lives in our journal.

  1. Empty every pocket and check the lining seams for grit before water touches the bag.
  2. Sponge the outside with lukewarm water and a drop of mild detergent. Work in small circles, not long strokes.
  3. For a bag with no metal frame, a mesh laundry bag on a cold delicate cycle is survivable. Zip it shut first.
  4. Never tumble dry and never hang it on a radiator. Heat takes the loft out of the wadding and it does not come back.
  5. Stuff it with a towel and let it dry away from direct sun, which fades pale shades faster than washing does.

Before you decide

Questions we get every week

Is a quilted nylon bag waterproof?

No. It is water resistant. Rain on the walk from the car will bead and wipe off, and a downpour will eventually get through the seams and the zip. Anything that must stay dry belongs in a sealed pouch inside the bag.

Will a light bag hold a laptop?

Some will. The totes and the travel backpacks in the range have a padded sleeve and say so in their description. The crescents and the small crossbodies do not, and a laptop rides badly in them.

Do the colours match across shapes?

Where we can, yes. We repeat a shade across silhouettes on purpose so a wristlet can match the tote it lives in. A shade stays in the range for as long as the mill keeps making the fabric.

How do I know a bag is still available?

Everything here had a current price when the page was last updated. A piece with no current price gets no page at all, so a short department is an honest one rather than a careless one.

Can I wash it in a machine?

A bag with no metal frame usually survives a cold delicate cycle in a mesh bag, zipped shut. Never tumble dry it. Heat flattens the wadding permanently.
